Hell has no fury....

WHAT A WEEK!!!! My mother's (God rest her soul) sister passed away on the Sunday before Easter.  Pitiful funeral.  My mom was one of 13 living children. My grandmother had her first son that caught pneumonia and died at the age of 1.  God bless her, she was so very hurt and devistated, she stood at the foot of that tiny grave and swore she would NEVER have another.  Well, she did.  She lost a set of twins because she had diptheria - YES, really she did and she lived through it to tell about it, but unfortunately lost her twins. All together though, she did have 2 other sets of twins that did live. Twenty years ago, when a family funeral occurred, it was unbelievable. Think about it...13 grown children, all married with children of their own. There was hundreds of people - no joke. When my grandmother passed, she had 140 survivors - strickly family.  Now, our family is down to about 8. Is is sad.  Then during the funeral, I learned that my mother's twin sister had lost her daughter just a few months ago (they live out of state), so that was a shock. Then there was another death of a friend. So I've not had the best week ever.

However, I did feel wonderful that the young lady that I baked her baby's first birthday cake was extremely happy...made me happy.  My daughter (the mom was her friend) said she had never been to any part where they ENTIRE CAKE was eaten -- but mine was. No, please understand, I am NOT bragging, I just use the information I paid dearly for and obtained taking the classes so that I could be professional.

I do have several openings for birthday cakes & wedding cakes - so I pray someone soon will follow me and order a cake. Promise you will be very happy :)!

Well, let's pray and hope that this week will be much, much better!

Responsibilities of baking cakes - even as a mother/grandmother

People that use fondant to completely cover a cake (if applied correctly) is smooth and silky. However, personally I do not completely cover a cake with fondant for cakes for children under 3.  The fondant sticks to the roof of the mouth and can cause choking - as a mom and grandmother, I just could not bear that to happen.  You can make a very nice smooth icing and you can even use fondant for small basic decorations - as long as you tell the mom which decorations are fondant.

Some people like the taste and some don't (my husband hates fondant!). If you have ever been at a wedding and realized that people at eating the "guts" of the cake, but not the "shell", then you know they don't like it either.

When I do wedding cakes, I give the bride-to-be a chance to see which she likes best - virgin white icing or white fondant. Most flowers - well those that appear actually normal and natural - are made from gum paste...again, you either like it or you don't. I've have had brides ask me to do the gum paste flower although she knew she was not going to eat it, and the customer always wins.

My youngest daughter is getting married soon and I am so excited.  She is going to let me do her cake - and YOU KNOW IT WILL BE OUTSTANDING! Big. Beautiful. Exactly what she wants! And one thing I can promise - and you know I have to be honest I don't know why - but the taste of my cakes are remarkable. It is almost like God touched it and became wonderful. NO - I AM NOT BRAGGING!  For instanct, every single time I make home make soup, it makes enough for 2 meals in a row and 4 frozen meals. I don't plan it that way. My husband and I have always joked that God blesses us with soup!

I do hope some people will follow my blog and try my cakes, I honestly do, because again, I have no idea why, but I'm blessed with the taste or my cakes and I just want to share it.

Well have a great Friday and enjoy the weekend :)

Loving what you do.

A long time ago, a good friend told me that if I really loved something I was doing, not only would I do well at it but I would make money at it -- and she was right.  My mother, God rest her soul, use to tell me that I would make some money if I were not so busy "giving it away".  What she meant was I'm not one of those ladies that makes cakes and then charges hundreds to thousands of dollars.  Yes, I am certified and I make decorations and flowers and people that look absolutely real, but I think it is almost a sin to over-charge someone simply because you are blessed with the ability to do something that not everyone else can do. I try my best to do my best and I purchase items in bulk to see both you and me money.  I've done wedding cakes you would NOT believe, and I've had the pleasure of doing birthday cakes that were the center of the party.  Simply because I love what I do!  And yes, I do hope this blog will bring me customers that enjoy good quality tasting cake along with beauty because each day of our life is a celebration and we all need to celebrate!

Some of my most favorite designers!

My favorite cakes!

I absolutely LOVE to cook and decorate wedding cakes.  One thing I do so different than most cake makers, I NEVER FREEZE CAKES!  I work with my fondant decorations first so that they will dry and not bleed in color or fall apart.  Freezing a cake freezes the moisture right out of it.  That is why you hear people say "it was so dry"...well, it was dry because it has sat in a freezer from weeks, to days, to months! NO GOOD!  Of course, ALL OF MY CAKES ARE FRESH AND NEVER FROZEN.  Also, it does cost to purchase decorations such as stands, etc, but some people charge WAY TOO MUCH FOR A CAKE.  I do believe in Karma. So, if I do well for someone, then down the line good karma will come back to me. Soon (I'm kind of wildly busy right now) I'm going to post some pictures of my cakes so that you can see some of them.  When I took all of my course, my instructor wrote and called the company and the first thing I know, they offered me a job. Yes, I would have LOVED to have taken the job, but it called for traveling which I just cannot do at this time...I have two many people here to love and be near -- figure it out -- 12 grandchildren = 12 birthday cakes.  brendakperkins@verizon.net I let people either design their own, or chose from one they have seen - ENJOY - and bless the artist that create such wonderful cakes!
